Meet Some Members

Hi, my name is Les Johns and I am 63 years old, rejoicing in being (probably) the oldest member of King’s Church. I am Trustee and I also look after the finances.
I delight in being the father of three, and grandfather of four of God’s gorgeous little creations. After taking early retirement from the Probation Service a number of years ago, I am now heavily involved in the world of Christian counselling as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer.
Having been a Christian for some 47 years (is it really that long?), it is not easy to give a thumbnail sketch of my spiritual journey. I can, however, make known my gratitude to God for His grace and mercy during some really good and some pretty awful times.
The greatest lessons He has taught me are to enjoy the present – leaving behind the past, not fearing the future; and that it is our relationship with Him that he enjoys – more than our religious practices. |

Hello, I’m Irene. I am a mother of two and grandmother of four. I’ve been attending
King’s for about 10 years now and I love the sense of ‘Family’.
It seems members of King’s are all so willing to look out for, and care for each other. For instance, when I was unwell, they helped me in any way they could, from ferrying me to hospital appointments to taking me out for a walk along the seafront. They did my housework – and even organised a rota to cook and deliver hot meals to my door each evening when I was too ill to cook!! Thankfully I am now fully recovered and returned to my job as a Driving Instructor which I have been doing for over 20 years.
I haven’t always been a Christian. My salvation about 17 years ago was very powerful, sudden and dramatic. I have been attending church ever since. I have to say that my life has become totally different since then – unrecognisably so actually! That doesn’t mean problems vanished overnight, but I now have the strength in the Lord to know that He will never allow me to go through more than I can handle and that He will always be with me – no matter what!
I am part of the King’s Money Advice Centre (kmac) which started just over a year ago. Although this is often challenging it is also very rewarding. I am also involved with the Crèche on Sundays.
I love being a part of the King’s Church family! It’s brilliant to see all the things that God is doing amongst us, and with us. It would take a manuscript to tell it all.

Hi! We're James & Claire. When we joined King’s Church back in January 1999, we were impacted by the vibrancy and joy of the worship, and the passion in the preaching. At first, it seemed quite scary, but we could also see that we had encountered a group of believers who wanted to grow in their faith, by applying Jesus' teaching, experiencing His power, and sharing His love.
We have been through a long stretch of difficulties trying to start a family; whilst holding onto a promise from God that we would have our own children one day.
During our time at King's we have seen our prayers answered, and are now parents of 3 sons: Michael, Joel and Jonah. They are living proof that God keeps His promises !
We serve the family of King’s as Coordinators of the Prayer Life @ King's. We also help in the Crèche Team and James is also part of the Worship Team.
Our desire in the future is go deeper with God, become more effective for Him and to see our children come to know Jesus for themselves. We are enjoying raising our boys and being a Jesus-centred family.

Hi, we are Matthew and Alison. We’ve been married since July 2008 which makes us still newly weds. We met in Manchester when we both did a youth work placement with the Message Trust. We decided to locate ourselves in Southend as Matthew grew up here and we are both eager to be involved in God’s plans for the area. Alison grew up in south east London and is a secondary school teacher. Matthew is a student at the moment studying for a degree in Early Years Education.
In our spare time we enjoy spending time with our families (we love you guys!), watching DVDs and playing with Lego. We both also like to make things, from wooden spoons to soft furnishings!
We are passionate about church, young people and seeing people grow in faith and maturity. We help Gary Bunker lead the Qube youth club and recently volunteered to lead a home group. We are now learning what this involves and are having great fun getting to know and encourage our friends more! King’s Church is growing and it is really exciting to be part of such a vibrant and alive part of the body of Christ. God has proved himself to be Good to us in so many ways it’s difficult to choose an example – come and ask us! |

Hi I'm Sam Curtis and I'm 25 years old and 6 foot five! I have been in Essex most of my life having moved to Southend from Middlesex when I was three years old . I work as the office manager in Brentwood for a Base Room & Loft Conversion company and have been doing that for the last three years. In July 2009 I married Grace who also attends Kings. We are both very excited about starting this new chapter of our lives together! I became a Christian in my early teens and have been brought up in a Christian family. It hasnt always been easy, God has changed me and taught me a lot and being in a church which is moving with God and in the power of the Holy Spirit has helped me grow as a Christian and I am blessed to have some amazing people around me who have been a part of this journey. Part of this journey was moving to Manchester with the Message Trust in 2006 where I did a creative evangelism course in DJ'ing. I love music and enjoy DJ'ing which I have done for the last seven years which now sees me going into Churches, Youth clubs and schools teaching DJ skills and equiping new DJ's in performing and playing to crowds. I also love films, pizza, spending time with people and especially (of course) my beautiful wife, Grace!! |

Hi, my name is Phil, I’m 24 years of age... I work in Basildon Hospital in the Haemodialysis Unit working with patients who have Kidney failure. I enjoy spending time with my friends. We go out for a drink and to the cinema. We have DVD nights, and visits to Theme Parks and going on spontaneous trips out. Although I have been bought up in a Christian family I didn’t actually find my personal faith or knew Jesus Christ as my Saviour until I found myself going through challenging circumstances. God used these and led me to discover Jesus for myself and not long after that, I found King's church where my faith in Jesus continues to grow.
I am part of the QUBE team which is a youth club for Yr 6 children from the school where we meet. I also help out as a member of the Audio/Visual Team on Sundays.

Hi my name is Cheryl and I'm 27 years of age I work with children aged 2-4 years of age in a playschool as a deputy supervisor, I enjoy my job very much as each day is different. God has given me a gift of working with children I enjoy doing various stuff in my spare time such as seeing friends, chilling out, Cinema/films, bowling, theme parks, camping e.t.c. I became a Christian in 1998 on the Bar'N'Bus. This was the most amazing step I have taken in my life and I have changed so much for the good. I have been gonig to Kings church since 2005 and God has really changed and challenged me and grown me during the last few years. I am involved serving in a few things at King's - one of which is the Qube. This is great outreach to the young people from Blenheim Primary School and I really enjoy it very much - even though sometimes it can be as challenging as it can possibly be . Thank you for reading!
